What is Arts Therapy?
Its easier to say what it isn’t. The session doesn’t start with “how was your week?” because the work focuses on the causal level. The talking tends to focus on events as triggers that expose deep habits and beliefs.
For example – what are the available interventions to help with panic attacks? In behavioural therapy you will learn to blow through a straw to steady the breathing. In cognitive therapy you will learn techniques to stop catastrophising and predicting the future.
In my work we can try to access a younger age where you felt overwhelmingly alone, vulnerable, and terrified. We will then aim to reassure our inner child through self-parenting. Other techniques from art therapy include emotional portraits, anger body maps, mood paintings, and masks.
We can also use drama to role play difficult conversations, we can do anger work through power animals or acting out an imaginary court case. Myths and archetypes are a rich soil to mine – for example using the fairy tale of Cinderella to work with bullying.
Another example is if I work with a couple and they are in two minds whether to get married, rather than just talk about it we will act out a wedding ceremony and then talk about how it felt.
You don’t have to be good at art or drama to work with these tools, just like you don’t have to be sporty to exercise. Please contact me if you have further questions.
Working With Children

Play Therapy
Play therapy with children and teenagers includes:
Chopping wood, making fire, cooking on a fire pit, tree climbing, gardening, frisbee, squash, kick boxing, cooking, baking, art, karaoke, mosaic, collage, fimo, puppet shows. We also engage in cognitive play that helps with reading, writing and dyslexia.
The play is a pathway to working through trapped or suppressed emotions in order to integrate them. We have fun, we laugh, we chat, we bond and that is a great environment in which to tackle sensitive or painful subjects in a gentle and organic way. Some of the activities are built for anger work, some for greater flexibility, some for promoting leadership, or for learning to become a team player.

Testimonials
“I can’t recommend Talia highly enough. Her work is genuinely life changing. I have first hand experience and have also recommended to many friends and colleagues, including children. Have never met anyone who she hasn’t helped walk a renewed and positive path, from healing deep trauma to complex relationship issues and low self esteem and the like.”
Tiffany Coppersmith-Heaven
“The parenting landscape has changed, and with so many outside influences, it’s easy to feel unsure about where your family values lie or how to stay consistent. Working with Talia has been incredibly helpful. She’s a trusted sounding board who supports our decision-making as a family and provides clear, child-friendly phrases that truly encourage positive behaviours. Talia has a wonderful way of meeting children at their level, incorporating numerous fun, engaging games into each session — our child genuinely looks forward to their “play date with the scientist.” We attended sessions as a family, completed the insightful homework she provided, and gained so much from the experience. We plan to stay in touch and return for more sessions as our child grows and our needs evolve.“
